    Preparing for Your Child's Second Opinion

    Getting a second opinion starts with an email to our coordinator. You don’t need a doctor’s referral. 

    We’ll collect information about your child, like their medical history, your concerns, and care journey. Generally, we may ask for:

    • Current or expected diagnosis
    • Diagnosing doctor’s name, address, and contact information
    • Your address and contact information
    • Health insurance information
    • Results from tests, imaging, or lab work
    • Written treatment plans, if available
    • Other records as needed

    Scheduling Your Child’s Visit

    After reviewing your child’s case as a team, we may schedule a second opinion call, a video visit, or an in-person visit to go over our recommendations. You may meet with one of our specialists to go over everything in detail.

    During this process, we answer all your questions and empower you to make the best decisions for your child.

    We provide a written summary of our recommendations that you can share with your child’s doctor. We’re available to consult with them as well.

    Sometimes, we may recommend additional tests or exams. We’ll help guide you through the next steps.

    Convenient Video Visits

    In many cases, we can offer second opinion appointments through scheduled, live video visits. You can avoid waiting rooms and save travel time.

    When to Get a Second Opinion

    You may wonder when to get a second opinion. 

    The simple answer is anytime you have questions or need to make a care decision. Sometimes, for certain procedures, it’s required by your health insurance company. 

    It’s good to know that most doctors encourage second opinions. They often will consult with us, too. 

    Reasons families come to us for second opinions include:

    Cost for a Second Opinion

    Second opinion appointments may be covered by insurance. We encourage you to check your plan benefits. If insurance does not cover the visit, the out-of-pocket cost for a second opinion is $800.
